چکیده

Kengo Miyazono, in his work Delusions and Beliefs, defends a teleo-functional account of delusions. In my contribution to this symposium, I question one Miyazono’s motivations for appealing teleo-functionalism over its main rival, dry-functionalism. Miyazono suggests that teleo-functionalism, unlike dry-functionalism, can the compatibility theses (i) delusions are genuine doxastic states (doxasticism about delusions) (ii) do not perform typical causal roles beliefs (the difference thesis). argue, however, there also ways dry-functionalism compatibility. If what have say is correct, then perhaps too hasty—at least important respect—to opt Dry-functionalism has an equally good chance satisfying some explanatory goals.

Delusions and Other Irrational Beliefs

Delusional people are people saying very bizarre things like they are dead, their spouse is a robot, the TV star is talking to them, they are possessed by the devil, aliens are following them, and so on. Delusions and the role of beliefs in perceptual inference.

Delusions are unfounded yet tenacious beliefs and a symptom of psychotic disorder. Varying degrees of delusional ideation are also found in the healthy population. Here, we empirically validated a neurocognitive model that explains both the formation and the persistence of delusional beliefs in terms of altered perceptual inference. In a combined behavioral and functional neuroimaging study in ...

Extended cognition and functionalism

Andy Clark and David Chalmers argue that the mind sometimes extends outside the body to encompass features of the environment (HEC). HEC has been criticised by Fred Adams, Kenneth Aizawa, and Robert Rupert. In this paper, I argue for two claims: (1) HEC is a harder target than those critics have supposed; HEC is entailed by functionalism, a commonly held view in philosophy of mind, and one to w...
